MRI scans do not use X-rays so the possible concerns associated with X-ray pictures and CT scans (which use X-rays) are not associated with MRI scans. Even if not attracted to the magnet, metal objects can distort the MRI images. MRI contrast may also have an effect on other conditions such as allergies, asthma, anemia, hypotension (low blood pressure), and sickle cell disease. More severe reactions can include anaphylactic shock or nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. Because MRI uses powerful magnets, the presence of metal in your body can be a safety hazard if attracted to the magnet. People who are pregnant or have severe kidney disease should not get an MRI with contrast. They are well-equipped to deal with any adverse reactions. MRIs are not known to cause side effects in most people and can be powerful tools to provide an accurate diagnosis. Patients who are allergic to or sensitive to medications, contrast dye, iodine, or shellfish should notify the radiologist or technologist.
